Welcome to Alta, the gateway for exploring the Norwegian Arctic. Upon arrival at Alta airport, you’ll be greeted by your airport rep and transferred twenty minutes to Bjornfjell Mountain Lodge, your home for the next four nights. As you drive, take in your first sights of the incredible winter landscape. Depending on the time of year, the sun may just be above the horizon giving a midday-sunrise affect, or you may experience the unique polar night. Either way, it will be abundantly clear that you’ve arrived to a unique and astonishingly beautiful part of the world.
After settling into the lodge and collecting your winter clothing, set out for your first Arctic activity. A guided tour will take you to the top of a nearby mountain, where you will enjoy sweeping views, a Norwegian dinner cooked over a bonfire, toasty drinks, and hopefully, your first chance of seeing the northern lights.
Bjørnfjell Mountain Lodge is a home away from home and offers a cozy lounge and restaurant area where your warm loafers will be ready for you upon arrival. The views from the lodge are magnificent and reach as far as Alta fjord. All you have to do on a clear night is step outside and gaze at the stars or the lights. The rooms are decorated with natural materials and warm and calming colors. From your window you can see the surrounding nature and spectacular landscape that Bjørnfjell is situated within. The main lodge has several common areas such as the restaurant, lounge, outdoor seating, and of course, the great outdoors.

After a leisurely breakfast your lodge, set out for a lesson in Norwegian cross-country skiing. After a morning in the snow and lunch at the lodge, warm up in a private sauna cabin equipped with a jacuzzi, private lounge, and tapas-style snacks.
In the late afternoon, opt to do some sledding down the adjacent mountain, made all the more amazing thanks to its Alta fjord views. Finally, enjoy another 3-course dinner cooked over the fire.
Today’s another full day to take advantage of the snowy hills and mountains surrounding your Arctic lodge. After breakfast, visit Bjørnehiet, a mountaintop cabin offering spectacular views of the Alta fjord. Sip on a steaming mug of tea or coffee before sledding or hiking down the mountain.
After lunch, enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. Opt to do more cross-country Nordic skiing, go sledding on the hills surrounding the lodge, or simply unwind at the cozy lodge with a book and views of the Arctic landscape.
In the evening, enjoy another gourmet dinner, keeping your eyes peeled for northern lights shimmering across the sky.
Strap on some snowshoes and set out for a morning adventure into the surrounding forest. Snowshoeing is a preferred method of hiking in wintry northern Norway, due to how surprisingly easy it is to move across deep snow. Explore the forest under pastel polar skies, stopping to warm up with a hot drink and a bonfire.
Back at the lodge, enjoy a 2-course lunch before heading back into the forest – this time, from onboard a traditional horsedrawn sleigh. Bundled up with blankets, you’ll be pulled through a real winter wonderland, through the forest and alongside the Alta river. The evening culminates with dinner surrounding a roaring bonfire, all while listening to stories told by your local Nordic guide.
Say goodbye to Bjornfjell and drive to the Alta fjord, where you’ll spend the morning learning how to fish for Alta’s legendary king crabs. As you try your hand at catching this local delicacy, your expert guide will enthrall you with local fishing secrets, stories, and insights into the history of this traditional practice. Afterwards, you will make your way back to Sorrisniva for a gourmet fresh-as-can-be meal prepared using your catch of the day.
In the afternoon, make your way to your lodge for the next three nights, Sorrisniva Wilderness Lodge. After settling in and having the afternoon to unwind, you’ll hop back in a car as you set out on a hunt to search for northern lights. Enjoy a tasty and warming soup dinner and fika (coffee and hot drinks stop) in between hunting for the colorful aurora borealis.
At 70 degrees North and 250 miles above the Arctic Circle, Sorrisniva provides guests with the wonders of the high Arctic winter. The sun slowly disappears and between November 26th and January 15th, and the lodge experiences Polar Night. The 24-room recently renovated lodge is built on the banks of the Alta River in Norway’s high Arctic. The lodge is adjacent to the Igloo Hotel, offering guests the experience to spend the night in a room carved from ice. Sorrisniva offers a gourmet restaurant, lounge, and a plethora of outdoor adventures.
Get to know one of the Norwegian Arctic’s preferred method of travel: dog sledding. After breakfast, you’ll go to the nearby husky yard where you’ll get to learn about this traditional method of polar travel, meet the young pups, and meet dog mushers who are eager to share the dog sledding culture. You’ll also have the chance to ride on a sled as a team of dogs race through the forest alongside the Alta river. Enjoy lunch inside a heated converted barn overlooking the dogs outside playing in the snow.
Back at the lodge, you’ll have the evening to do as you please, including a 3-course dinner at an upscale restaurant.
Take advantage of your last full day in the Norwegian Arctic with a morning snowmobiling trip from Sorrisniva through the Alta Valley and up to the Finnmark Plateau. As you ride through the forest, enjoy the midday twilight and unique colors of the Arctic winter, culminating with views over sweeping snow-covered vistas.
In the afternoon, enjoy a Nordic-style lunch, and have the option to either relax or book time in the sauna and private jacuzzi.
Tonight, you’ll spend the night in a luxury igloo. The neighboring Igloo Hotel is a work of art and sleeping in one of its icy suites is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Each suite is a one-of-a-kind creation, handcrafted by skilled ice sculptors, and features reindeer hides and insulated mattresses to stay warm through the night.
In the evening, enjoy a final Nordic celebration with a gourmet 5-course meal, all the while keeping your eyes peeled out the window for your final chance to glimpse the aurora.
Say goodbye to the Arctic and board your flight departing Alta.
