Local Markets of Latin America: A Doorway to Cultural Understanding

Return to Journal Next entry

Not everyone is a fan of shopping; too many people, too long lines. However, something can be said about the local markets or mercados across Latin America. They are full of life and give tourists a peek into the daily lives of locals and a cultural understanding of the country.

Latin America’s artisanal and food markets are vibrant hubs that attract both locals and travelers alike. Each market has its own personality and offers a sensory overload of colors, sounds, and smells. While visiting any country in Latin America, I encourage all travelers to step into an open-air market to try new foods, discover handmade crafts, and experience the best of what the city or town has to offer.

While traveling in Medellin, Colombia, I was able to try five new fruits that you cannot get anywhere else. In Lima, you can sit at one of several food stands for fresh ceviche and taste the flavors of the region. Many open-air markets in Cusco have a large selection of knitwear made from alpaca wool. These crafts tell the story of Latin America’s history and its people’s incredible skills. The mercados are historical guides and are cherished among the local people because they support the economy and create a sense of community.

San Pedro Market, Cusco

Some of the most famous markets in Latin America and my personal favorites:

Ecuador: Otavalo (small town 2 hours north of Quito), Otavalo Market
Otavalo Market is known to be South America’s largest market. The people of this region have been weavers and artisans since before Incan times. You will find an array of crafts and handmade items such as colorful ponchos, rugs, carved statues, baskets, and paintings.

Peru: Cusco, San Pedro Market
San Pedro Market is where the action happens in Cusco. Less than a 15 minute walk from the main square, this market has local produce stands, handicrafts, food stalls, bakeries, and flower/herb stands. Locals purchase their produce and meats there and have lunch at their favorite stand.

Argentina: Buenos Aires, San Telmo Market
Every Sunday afternoon this market explodes with stands that go on for 10 blocks. You will see vendors selling mate gourds, silver jewelry, leather bags, anything! This market is especially known for selling antique and vintage items. You can also witness a tango street performance or bands playing throughout the day.

Colombia: Medellín, Placita de Flores
Placita de Flores is a local flower and herb market in the heart of Medellín. The market also sells coffee, fruits, vegetables, and meat. This is where you can try a plethora of local fruits such as lulo, granadilla, guava, and guanabana. Your tastebuds will surely explode! I bought a spray with a mixture of herbs that completely clears your sinuses!

San Telmo Market, Buenos Aires

My top market tips:

  1. Bring cash (many of the stands do not accept card)
  2. Practice basic Spanish phrases
  3. Be aware of your surroundings
  4. It is best to have a local guide show you around and explain some of the history behind the market/ what to buy and foods to try. They know which items are rip offs/ scams!
  5. Ask before you take photos
  6. If traveling with kids, you can make a game out of this experience. Tell them to look for certain items and give them a time to complete or give them a few dollars and see how many foods they can buy with it

Placita de Flores Market, Medellín

Whether you are planning a trip to hike Machu Picchu, taste wine in Mendoza, or sail to the Galapagos islands, be sure to fit in a trip to the local market for tasty food, handmade crafts, and witness a rich cultural experience.

Let the exploring begin!
