Vietnam is known for its awe-inspiring landscapes, and two of its most iconic destinations—Halong Bay* (see note at bottom of article) and Ninh Binh—showcase the country’s natural beauty in different yet mesmerizing ways. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that feature limestone karst formations jutting out of either the bay (Halong) or rice paddies (Ninh Binh). Here’s a look at what makes each destination special, their differences, and how to choose which one to visit.
Limestone karsts in Halong Bay, Vietnam
Halong Bay is one of the world’s most famous natural wonders, known for its emerald-green waters and nearly 2,000 limestone islands that rise dramatically from the sea. When you visit Halong Bay, you’ll experience a surreal seascape. A cruise through the bay is the best way to appreciate the towering islands and rock formations. The tranquil waves, combined with the limestone cliffs, create a magical setting, especially during sunrise or sunset.
In contrast, Ninh Binh offers a quieter, land-based beauty that rivals Halong Bay in its grandeur. Often called “Halong Bay on land,” Ninh Binh has similar limestone karsts but in a rural, verdant setting, surrounded by rice paddies and rivers. Tam Coc, one of Ninh Binh’s highlights, features a boat ride through these lush fields, winding rivers, and caves, giving visitors a peaceful way to experience this stunning scenery.
Halong Bay, Vietnam
Halong Bay is all about the cruise experience. Visitors can choose between one or two-night cruises, with activities like kayaking, swimming, and exploring caves. Some cruises offer cooking classes, Tai Chi sessions at dawn, or visits to floating fishing villages, adding variety to the journey. If you’re looking for relaxation paired with exploration, Halong Bay cruises are ideal.
Ninh Binh offers a different set of experiences, centered around both exploration and connection with local culture. The area is known for its peaceful river boat rides, where local rowers guide you through winding rivers and limestone cliffs. Ninh Binh is also home to ancient pagodas like Bich Dong Pagoda. For those looking to be more active, hiking to the top of Mua Cave offers panoramic views of the lush countryside and karst mountains, while biking in Van Long Nature Reserve allows you to soak in the beauty on smaller country roads.
An excursion through misty and magical Ninh Binh
If your ideal trip involves cruising on calm waters, witnessing a dramatic seascape, and enjoying the luxury of boat travel, Halong Bay is the destination for you. It’s iconic, visually striking, and offers activities for relaxation and adventure alike.
If you’re drawn to countryside scenery, local culture, and a quieter experience, Ninh Binh is the better choice. You’ll enjoy a deeper connection with Vietnamese landscapes and have a chance to explore ancient temples and villages without the crowds.
For those with the time, visiting both is highly recommended, as they provide complementary experiences. Halong Bay and Ninh Binh are both unforgettable, offering a unique glimpse into Vietnam’s extraordinary natural beauty.

Check out some of our Vietnam itineraries that feature Halong Bay and Ninh Binh, or reach out to a Vaya Destination Specialist if you’d like to ask more questions.
Note: Vaya’s Asia Destination Specialists usually prefer to send clients to either Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay as the scenery is the same, but there are far less crowds than Halong Bay. For the purposes of this article, I’ve used “Halong Bay,” but mean the greater Halong Bay scenic area, which encompasses lesser traveled Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long Bay.
